Programs, whether commercial or free – such as Eraser – offer to overwrite the data several times according to “DoD standards” (referring to the US department of defense) and so on. A study conducted last year has found that this is an unnecessary waste of time. Even though a single bit has a 56% chance of being correctly recovered, chances go down to below 1% if all eight bits of a byte have to be recovered.
